There are business opportunities for women owned businesses in both the federal contracting and commercial sectors. In most cases the business must be certified that they are indeed a Woman Owned (Small) Business.

In the federal contracting arena, the Woman Owned Small Business (WOSB) and Economically Disadvantaged WOSB (EDWOSB) was revitalized in 2011 to assist with leveling the playing field for federal contracts. The program went through a significant change in 2020 requiring an application/certification process. A firm must be certified by the bid-due date to be eligible to bid on a WOSB or EDWOSB set-aside solicitation.

The opportunities for woman owned businesses fall under Supplier Diversity programs in the commercial sector.  Often, large businesses require business certifications for the sub-categories under the Supplier Diversity program.
